CLIMATE & PHYSIOGRAPHY

 

Haldia enjoys a tropical climate which is characterized by a predominantly 'hot and humid' weather with high rainfall. The average high temperature in summer months i.e. April-June is 36oC. The maximum temperature in summer can shoot up to 45oC. Winters are cool and pleasant with minimum temperature hovering around 9.6oC. The area receives an average rainfall of around 1580 mm and the humidity typically varies from 68 to 80 percent. Haldia has recorded mean wind speed in the range of 5.5 to 9.9 km per hour. however, according to the 'Vulnerability Atlas prepared by Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council (BMPTC)', it falls in 'Very High Damage Risk Zone - B' with Probable Maximum Wind Speed of 78 m/s.

Haldia and the adjoining regions are primarily composed of alluvial soil along with Black, Reger and Red Terriginous soils. The geology of this region is characterized by Khondalites, Chamockites, Quartzite and Quartz Veins. The average altitude is observed to be 8m above Mean Sea Level. The nearing capacity of the soil is very low ranging from 1.5 tones/sq.m at surface to 5 tones/sq.m at a depth of 5. from the surface.
